Protecting live streams.
In Version 6.2 and above, you can now select the Publishing Point itself, which
is more convenient than the method below. In the Directory textbox, expect to see text of the form:
"astream (publishing point)\"
-
In Windows Media Administrator, set up the Publishing point.
-
When specifying the alias, you also specify the path. Make a note of the path.
Likely it will be of the form
msbd://21.21.21.21:7007 or
msbd://100.100.200.200/avmedia_23
http://100.215.127.74:8080
-
In VideoQuota, add an access restriction.
Instead of specifying a directory on your system via the browse button,
enter the path noted above directly into the path text-box.
But remember to REPLACE FORWARD SLASHES with BACKSLASHES.
So the examples above would become:
msbd:\\21.21.21.21:7007 or
msbd:\\100.100.200.200\avmedia_23
http:\\100.215.127.74:8080\
Confusion Alert: Although the software asks for a directory to protect, and has a browse button to
select a directory - don't do that.
INSTEAD use the exact string you used in your Broadcast Unicast Publishing Point.
You may have to experiment with adding the port number, usually you will have to.
-
If none of the above work, try adding the directory that the streams are located
in, like you would for a normal Webquota site you want to protect.
-
Grant permissions to users/groups as usual.
New in V6.1 - Pay-per-minute.
A basic pay-per-minute capability is included in the current version of VideoQuota - V6.1.
To enable, in the By ODBC tab, set the per minute price you wish for this directory.
Then open the dialog. If the per minute price is not zero,
the Balance button will be enabled, and you can specify the penny-balance field.
This field will be decremented by the per minute price times the number of minutes viewed.
This happens at the end of each view.
The software is smart enough to cut off viewing
when and if the balance is drained while the viewer is still watching.
"Kickstart" instructions
-
Set yourself up at the console of the machine you are installing on.
-
Install the software, following the instructions provided.
-
Create a directory that contains asf files (NOT asx files).
-
Make sure Enable Fast Cache is turned off.
Caching can disable Basic Authentication, because it necessarily bypasses the usual processing channels.
-
Run the Windows GUI application (Start/Flicks/VideoQuota).
-
Add some users.
-
Click the Access button,
-
Add, then use the browse button to select the directory.
-
Using the "By Internal DB" tab,
select the users you want to grant access, and add them to the list of permitted users.
-
The protected directory is now set up!
-
If this does not appear to work, clear the Application Event Log, restart Windows Media Services from
the Control Panel, Services. Check the (refreshed) Application Event Log again to make sure the VideoQuota
startup messages are present.
Other Notes
The Referer, IPAddress and UserAgent fields are not available in VideoQuota
for the
By Com
and
Advanced database
features at this time.
Changing the realm from "Protected by VideoQuota":
There should be a dialog:
Options/VideoQuota Options/Realm, which is missing (it'll be in the next version).
In the meanwhile, you can change this in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
/Software
/Flicks Software
/AuthentiX
/1.0
/AuthentiXConfig
create a value called defaultRealm, of type REG_SZ, and set it to be the realm you want.
