Harry is a special young man -- funny, caring, a natural leader who looks out for his friends -- but his life has been turned upside down by bouts of psychosis. At the center where he gets medication and treatment he meets another patient, Kate, a high-strung and impulsive young beauty who draws him into her private, magical world. Madly in love, they set up house together after Harry regains his white-collar job. But when Kate becomes pregnant, they find themselves at odds with doctors and relatives who are determined to restrict their choices. Pregnancy is "too risky" for Kate and the baby, they're told. But Harry and Kate believe the child, a girl they've named Astral, has 'chosen them.' With every reason to fight the system, the lovers make the bold sacrifice of setting aside their medication to be sure the baby is born healthy. Now they must fight the demons within them as well as the outside world as they struggle against great odds to stay on the path they've chosen.
